Kevin Concannon, U.S. Department of Agriculture Undersecretary of Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services recently visited the Foggy Bottom market.

Undersecretary Concannon chatted with farmers, and discussed the need for greater food equity and access in DC with the FRESHFARM executive director Mike Koch (pictured here).

As DC students start back to school, 3,000 of them will have opportunities this academic year to garden, cook, and eat tasty nutritious recipes together, in school, as part of the FRESHFARM FoodPrints program. Now in its 10th year, FoodPrints continues to bring positive, hands-on gardening and cooking experiences to students in partner DC public elementary schools.

FoodPrints educates students and their families about ways to eat nutritious, local, in-season foods. Students in the program grow produce in their school gardens and prepare recipes using what they harvest–supplemented by produce from FRESHFARM farmers markets–in kitchen classrooms. Many of the students who participate are from high-needs areas of the city, making in-school access to a variety of produce all the more important.

A core focus of FRESHFARM’s philanthropic work is improving food access in our region. Do you know about FRESHFARM’s Matching Dollars program? This program matches what shoppers spend with their federal nutrition benefits at market, up to $10. Matching Dollars increases the purchasing power of our neighbors in need and gets more money in the pockets of our hardworking farmers. It’s a win-win! If you’d like to donate to the Matching Dollars program, click here: https://app.mobilecause.com/form/Yq8i1Q.

Donate at least $20 and you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a ticket to the FRESHFARM Feast on October 18.

You shop at your local farmer’s market because you care: about where your food comes from, how it was made, and the people behind it. When you shop at a FRESHFARM Market, you’re doing more than your weekly grocery shopping – you’re supporting sustainable agriculture, helping family farms thrive, and reinvesting your food dollars in the local economy. You’re also supporting a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that works to expand food access, educate the public about food, and support our region’s farmers and makers.
