The Apartments at CityCenter is in the LEED

The color green has taken on a more significant definition than a mix between the primary colors blue and yellow. Over the last 10 years, the word has redefined itself as more necessary environmental practice than reptilian hue. Thinking “green” is often coupled with the concept of sustainable development, the creation of urban spaces that are culturally, socially, and environmentally sound. Millions of people have become increasingly more conscious of their impact on their given environment and are taking legitimate steps to lessen their carbon footprint.

Washington, DC, in particular, is counted among the most energy efficient and environmentally responsible urban centers in America, it is also among the most rapidly developing. CityCenterDC is an exciting new multi-use development in the heart of DC, which features an exclusive 458 unit residential community, The Apartments at CityCenter. A project spearheaded by developer Hines, considered a world leader in sustainable development, the 10 acre, 8 building, 2,000,000 sq. ft. development is not only an attribute to the economy but a friend to its environment.

To ensure that developers maintain certain environmental and social standards, The United States Green Building Council instituted a thorough 3rd party certification process called LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It establishes the standard for identifying green building construction, design, and maintenance solutions dealing with a variety of building types: residential, commercial, or whole communities. Buildings are given scores based on an intricate ratings system of 9 categories with corresponding credits and points. Buildings are given credits based on construction and design elements such as site sustainability, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. Within these credits are even more benchmarks like water efficient landscaping, alternative transportation accommodation, and the use of recycled construction materials which in total equal about 110 points. The certifications range from a standard LEED certification (40-49 pts), Silver certification (50-59 pts), Gold (60-79 pts), to Platinum, which is a score above 80.

CityCenterDC itself boasts a Gold pre-certification in Neighborhood Development. The Apartments at CityCenter is designed to achieve a coveted Silver Certification in New Construction, making it an industry leader in sustainable residential communities. Featuring unparalleled access to mass transit, ample bicycle storage facilities, incredible amounts of natural light, green roofs, advanced HVAC systems including cogeneration, water saving appliances, and eco-friendly bamboo flooring, The Apartments at CityCenter highlights the amenities of downtown living while doing its part to keep its surrounding environment “green.”
