Paul Mellon was one of America’s greatest art collectors and remains one of the National Gallery of Art’s leading benefactors. Timed to coincide with the Gallery’s 75th anniversary, In Celebration of Paul Mellon features 88 of the finest pastels, watercolors, drawings, prints, and illustrated books selected from his donations.

Mr. Mellon contributed to the National Gallery more than one thousand carefully selected, distinguished works of art–primarily French and American paintings and drawings–originally acquired for his and his wife’s private enjoyment, but always with the idea that they would one day be shared with the American public. He cared deeply about creating a gracious and hospitable setting for museum visitors and about providing the opportunity for direct encounters with great works of art. He commented in 1967, “There is no intellectual or emotional substitute for the authentic, the original, the unique masterpiece.” Paul Mellon was a sincere and devoted art collector in whose life works of art were integral.

The great majority of Paul Mellon’s gifts, however, are works of art on paper, which, because of their sensitivity to light, cannot be constantly displayed. Timed to coincide with the Gallery’s 75th anniversary, this celebratory exhibition brings together some 80 of the finest pastels, watercolors, drawings, prints, and illustrated books given to the Gallery by Paul Mellon. Among the works on display are evocative watercolors by Winslow Homer and Édouard Manet, powerful portrait drawings by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Edgar Degas, sporting lithographs by George Bellows, a pen landscape by Vincent van Gogh, and cubist compositions by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.

Apartments at CityCenter residents can enjoy a short cab, bike ride or extended walk over to the National Gallery this Spring. We are indeed lucky to have so many treasures like this one nearby our home here in DC.
