First Signs of Spring: Cherry Blossoms and Cherry Picks

The National Cherry Blossom Festival commemorates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the city of Washington, DC. All eyes are on when the cherry blossoms might bloom with predictions from the National Park Service forecast for March 18-23 and Washington Post‘s Capital Weather Gang predicting March 24-28.  This will be the earliest blossoms for the blooms due to the warmer winter this year.

Unknown-2

The best viewing locations are the Tidal Basin and along the shoreline of East Potomac Park, extending all the way to Hains Point. Small clusters of trees can be found along the National Mall, just northwest of the Lincoln Memorial and around the Washington Monument.

While the festival itself focuses much attention on Japanese culture, Cherry Picks are the result of not only cultural inspiration, but also the freshest finds of the season. Restaurants show off their creativity with beverages and food that take on the flavor of DC’s signature springtime celebration. Taste cherry blossom-themed creations from many of the city’s top mixologists and chefs.  Check out the list of participating restaurants:
